I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my son for years. My husband and I have done everything in our power. We tried medications, counseling, therapy, diet changes — nothing seemed to work. Having a visual of the brain allows us to understand what is troubling our son. At last, we can get inside his head and work with him. He is a lot calmer now.

My daughter is the sweetest girl you can meet, until she has one of her meltdowns; they can be very severe. We couldn’t figure out what was wrong: she is intelligent, well-spoken and sociable. I was surprised to find out that her brain map results matched with published scientific papers indicating that she is on the autism spectrum.

Since she is so high functioning, she does not fall into the accepted diagnostic criteria. We now work with her to reduce her sensory overwhelm and coach her on social skills. She is so much better today. We are so grateful to have the brain map done.

I have struggled for years with depression; ever since childhood, feeling stable is something that occurs rarely. I have tried psychotherapy, EMDR, natural remedies, and have changed my life to manageable levels. Now in my forties, I knew that I was fighting with something beyond me.

Resisting medication thus far had not gotten me very far. After a series of marriage and job failures, something had to be done. Wary of medication side effects and being treated like a guinea pig in drug experimentation, I was very fortunate to encounter the brain mapping method.

The research center that analyzed the brain map results and then recommended rational suggestions said that this method produced an 80% success rate. I was very lucky; the medication combinations that resulted from this investigation worked the first time around. No longer suffering from an inability to get up in the morning, I got a lot done.

At the ripe old age of 40, I am even considering going back to school and catching up on life. In my case, my depression seems to have a strong biological cause. Unlike what most of my family and friends thought, it is a chemical imbalance. It is not “all in my head”; I am not a pessimist and could not just “snap out of it” with willpower. I am so glad that we live in an age of technology where we can see what is going on in the brain. One day, I hope that mental illness will be taken as seriously as a disease that strikes the body.

My wife and I adopted two children ever since they were infants. We have successfully raised four children before that, and thought that we had the child-raising thing down. We were surprised to find out that our adopted children were very different; meltdowns, behavior issues and chaos were our daily companions. My wife and I were walking on eggshells every minute of the day in our own home. We just did not understand what was wrong.

Dr. Yip’s brain map allowed us to see how far out our children are compared to a typical child. Both of our adopted children suffered since birth with trauma and abandonment. It was an educational experience for us to learn that what happened so long ago when a person is barely aware can have such profound effects on their brain. They are affected in their ability to attach, regulate emotions, and judge the world in an accurate manner.

Knowing what we know now, we approach our children differently. They need structure, consistent response and consequence handling, and getting through to them the lesson of the event at hand — in addition to love. Love alone was not enough. What we took for granted in our birth children, we began to learn through our adopted children.

We are better people with our adopted children because we got to experience what it takes to build a person. Making a life is easy; building a person the right way takes tremendous patience, courage and knowledge. We are grateful to Dr. Yip for spending a lot of time with us, over and above the time it takes to do the test, to help us understand. In the end, knowledge won out.
